Multi-Generational Travel Planning: 7 Mistakes You're Making (and How to Fix Them)

Planning a vacation for grandparents, parents, and kids all at once? I see this all the time with my clients near Niagara Falls, and honestly, it's one of my favorite types of trips to plan! There's something really special about three generations making memories together, but let me tell you, it can also turn into a logistical nightmare if you're not careful.

I've worked with dozens of families over the years who tried to DIY these big trips, and they all seem to run into the same headaches. The good news? Every single one of these mistakes is totally avoidable when you know what to watch out for. Let me walk you through the seven biggest ones I see (and how to fix them before your dream family reunion turns into a stress-fest).

Mistake #1: Trying to Book Multiple Rooms Yourself

Here's what happens: You find the perfect resort online. You're ready to book. You add one room to your cart... then another... and by the time you're adding the third room, either the price has jumped or those rooms have sold out completely. I cannot tell you how many frustrated calls I get from families who've experienced this exact scenario!

The fix: This is where working with a travel agent (hi, that's me!) makes all the difference. I have processes in place to hold multiple rooms at the same price point so your whole family gets the same rate. No one's stuck paying more because they were slower to click "book now."

Mistake #2: Ignoring the "Partial Ocean View" Trap

Oh boy, do I have stories about this one! Some resorts advertise a "Partial Ocean View" room that's basically you standing on your tiptoes on the balcony, craning your neck to see a sliver of blue. At other properties, the Partial Ocean View is so close to the Oceanfront category that you can save yourself a ton of money and barely notice the difference.

And don't even get me started on room categories that haven't been renovated since the 1980s. Nobody wants to walk into a time capsule when they're expecting a relaxing getaway!

The fix: I've either been to these resorts myself, know someone who has, or I have a direct line to a sales manager who can tell me exactly what you're getting. Is it the newly renovated wing or the old one? Are the pools heated in winter? What does "garden view" actually mean at this property? I get you the real answers before you book.

Mistake #3: Not Starting with Your "Hierarchy of Needs"

I always tell my clients: before we even look at waterslides or kids' clubs, we need to figure out the non-negotiables. Does someone in your group have mobility issues? Are there dietary requirements like Gluten-Free, Vegan, or Halal that the resort absolutely needs to accommodate?

The fix: Start with what matters most. Once I narrow down the resorts that can handle your must-haves (accessible rooms, specific food requirements, medical needs), then we start having fun looking at activities and room amenities. I work with terrific supplier partners who understand that their properties need to work for a wide range of interests. Trust me, there are plenty of resorts out there that offer both relaxing adults-only pools and fantastic kids' clubs with waterslides. It's all about narrowing down the options to find what works best for everyone.

Mistake #4: Letting One Person Get Stuck with the Entire Bill

This is such a common source of family tension! One person puts the whole trip on their credit card, and then they're stuck trying to collect payments from everyone else. Awkward dinner conversations, Venmo requests that get ignored, family group chats that turn passive-aggressive... no thanks!

The fix: When you book with me, I send out individual invoices and secure booking forms to each person who's paying. Everyone handles their own payment directly, no more trying to keep track of who owes what between family members. Plus, my clients usually have the option to pay a deposit at booking and then pay off the rest of the trip over time. It takes all the financial pressure off one person and keeps things fair and transparent.

Mistake #6: Not Asking for Help When Disaster Strikes

Let me share a story that really shows why having a travel agent in your corner matters. I had clients who had booked a family reunion on their own, and it got cancelled because of a hurricane. They were devastated, and in a total panic trying to figure out what to do next. They had no idea where to even start looking for a replacement trip.

The fix: They reached out to me, and I got to work immediately. I found them a terrific, newly renovated family resort that fit their budget, had amazing food options, and a ton of activities for the kids. The parents and grandparents were all so relieved and happy that they didn't have to miss out on their big trip. Everyone had a fantastic time, and they told me they never could have pulled it together without help. That's the kind of magic that happens when you have someone who knows the industry and has the connections to make things happen fast.

Mistake #7: Skipping the Group Planning Conversation

Here's a mistake I see all the time: one person makes all the decisions, books everything, and then is shocked when half the family complains about the itinerary. "Why are we doing this?" "I wanted to do that instead!" Sound familiar?

The fix: Get everyone involved from the start. I like to ask each family member (or at least each family unit) what their one "must-do" activity is. Maybe grandma really wants a spa day. Maybe the teenagers are dying to try paddleboarding. Maybe dad's been dreaming about that sunset catamaran cruise. When everyone gets to contribute their wish list, you end up with a trip that has something special for each generation, and way less complaining!

Why Multi-Generational Travel Planning Is Worth Getting Right

Listen, I know I'm biased because this is literally what I do for a living: but there's a reason why everyone near Niagara Falls who's planning these big family trips ends up reaching out to a travel agent. The complexity multiplies with every person you add, and the stakes feel higher when you're trying to create memories across three generations.

The beauty of working with someone like me is that I've seen it all. I know which resorts say they're family-friendly but really aren't great for toddlers. I know which cruise lines have the best kids' clubs that actually give parents a break. I know how to negotiate group rates and secure perks that you'd never get booking on your own.

And honestly? Planning these trips should be fun, not stressful. You should be getting excited about making memories with your family, not pulling your hair out trying to coordinate room blocks and flight schedules.
